Why do I need a permit? Both licensed contractors and homeowners installing electrical equipment require electrical installation permits. An electrical permit gives permission or authorization in writing to perform work regulated by Technical Safety BC. Contractors must obtain permits and submit an Electrical Contractor Authorization as the work progresses and upon completion of the installation. Electrical permits ensure that the work being performed is safe and compliant to all relevant codes and standards through proper inspections.

What is the difference between a Quote and an Estimate?A quote is an offer to perform the work for a fixed price within a specific timeframe. Usually, a quoted job with us will include specific details of the work to be performed, and will require a walkthrough with the customer or detailed specs or drawings will be provided. The terms of the quote may be adjusted and reflected as 'add-ons' if scope changes after the work has been accepted. Additionally, if the price of materials changes significantly, we reserve the right to adjust the rates. An estimate is a rough idea of how much the job will cost. When we provide an estimate, it is based on limited information about the work based on our experience performing similar work. When comparing offers from other contractors, ensure that you are making similar comparisons and be sure to read the details of what is included in your quoted price.

Hire a professional licensed electricianLook for a licensed, reputable, and experienced electrician. Islay electric is fully licensed, bonded, and has over 20+ years of experience. This means we spend less time figuring things out and getting it right the first time.
-
Don't compare electricians based on hourly ratesWhen inquiring about an hourly rate or comparing quotes or estimates, be sure to take into account the electricians experience, quality of work, reputation, insurance, and equipment. An experienced, licensed, insured, well-equipped electrician with a fully stocked van that charges a fixed price can be a better alternative than a cheaper, inexperienced electrician who does not have the right tool or solid warranty. A knowledgeable experienced electrician can usually do the work quicker and more efficiently resulting in a lower bill overall despite charging a higher hourly rate.
-
Clear the work spaceThe simplest and easiest way to reduce electrical costs is to clear out the working space prior to the scheduled visit. Ensure that any electrical panels and electrical rooms are easily accessible. By creating a clear workspace less time is wasted on moving furniture, appliances, or items out the space. Ensuring any walkways or rooms are clear of construction debris or household items also ensures a safe workspace for our team.

Consider adding upgradesIslay Electric can suggest energy-efficient upgrades such as dimmer switches, motion sensors, or LED lighting that can help cut costs on your monthly bills.
